Starting in May 2011, this video chronicles the 4 months it took to DIY a Kitchen Renovation. The house is 101 years old and the kitchen was in an extension built in 1922. The farmhouse sink remained from the original 1922 kitchen but did not make it into the final renovation. A full bath was converted into a half bath to make more room for the island. (who takes a bath off their kitchen anyway?) During the renovation it was noted that the walls were not well supported (dry 1X12's) so inside 2X6 walls were created. This allowed for R38 insulation. The entrance was expanded and dual French Pocket Doors were added. The floor is engineered acacia which is floating because of the added underfloor radiant heat. The cabinets are vinyl wrapped IKEA (~00 including integrated dishwasher and exhaust hood). The countertops were from All Island (~00) and are actual granite (I am a geologist). The floor was from Hardwood Bargains (Milan Acacia - 00). Appliances are Frigidaire Professional (00). Faucet is Moen (~0) and the sink was from Lowes. Hardware was from Home Depot (~0) and the stools were from JC Penney and Target (~0). Everything else (plumbing, wood, insulation, sheetrock and spackle) was a few thousand. Doing it yourself saves money and is greatly rewarding!
